John Main Seminar 1998 - Thomas Keating

"The Heart of the World"

The contemplative dimension of the Gospel -- in every society -- manifests itself in an ever-deepening relationship with the living Christ and in the practical caring for others that flows from that union.

Thomas Keating is a Cistercian monk and retired abbot. He presently resides at St. Benedict's Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado. Father Keating is a founder of the Centering Prayer movement and Contemplative Outreach, an international organization whose mission is to promote Centering Prayer. He is the author of many books which revive the Christian contemplative heritage, including "Open Mind, Open Heart."

Father Keating explored the following questions in the 1998 John Main Seminar:

---What might be the major elements of a spiritual life which is rooted in the Christian contamplative heritage and is, at the same time, in dialogue with other world religions, with modern science and the healing arts?

---What might be the impact of the contemplative dimension of the Gospel on the various Christian denominations today, on contemporary western society, and on the global spiritual consciousness that seems to be emerging?

---What forms might a Christian contemplative contribution to the emerging spiritual consciousness take in the coming milennium?

"The Heart of the World" Audiotapes

The best description of these tapes was expressed in Carla Cooper's 'Summary Comments and Thank You' to Fr. Keating at the Seminar..."Thank You for your abundant joy and humor - for your refusal to mince words or make the work of growing up in Christ seem any easier than it really is or any less extraordinary than it really is."
