Welcome to our home on the World Wide Web!

We are an international community that practices and teaches meditation in the Christian tradition. Our Quarterly Newsletter goes to individual meditators in a hundred countries. And there are weekly meditation groups that help support people's daily practice in over 60 countries.

Meditation, of course, is a Universal Tradition found in all the great religions. As such, it offers an important common ground for inter-religious dialog and a basis for peace in the world. Many Christians have been helped to recover contact with their own tradition of meditation, or contemplative prayer, because of the work of Fr. John Main, who is the inspiration of the World Community. His teaching of this ancient tradition of prayer is rooted in the Gospels and the early Christian monastic tradition of the Desert. Many groups and individuals use John Main's Opening Prayer and Laurence Freeman's closing prayer for meditation. Meditation helps people of all ages and cultures to find a simple, practical and meaningful way to awaken and deepen their spiritual life. Here, you can listen to Fr John talking about How to Meditate and learn how simple it is to start. To learn about this tradition and way of meditation read our section on The Essential Teaching. Each week we publish Weekly Readings which you can find on this Web page or get sent to your own Email address. (Subscribe here.)

Retreats and Seminars, like the John Main Seminar or the Monte Oliveto Retreat, are held regularly in many countries on a regular basis. You can check the schedule and register through this web page. Meditators of the younger generation are also actively involved in the life and work of the Community.

Meditation leads to compassionate action. In The Fruits of Meditation you can see examples of this and how meditators around the world have found meditation making an impact on their lives and relationships.

To help you start and to support your meditation practice you can find books, tapes videos and other resources in a range of languages available from our Bookstore.

The present Director of the Community is Fr Laurence Freeman OSB whose travels and writings and retreats around the world enrich and extend the community. There is a growing number of other teachers in the Community whose work is co-coordinated by the School. The Director is advised and assisted by a Guiding Board & Patrons composed of meditators from around the world.

A powerful way to start and continue is to join a local group near to where you live or work. You will find a warm and friendly welcome. Many local communities put on a six-week introductory course on meditation which is an ideal way to learn and begin.

If you would like to find out more you can also talk to one of the Christian Meditation centres or National Coordinators or to a volunteer at the WCCM International Office in London.

The World Community for Christian Meditation is a registered Charity in several countries and grows through the dedication and support almost entirely of volunteers.
