Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal is the psychiatrist best known for first describing seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and pioneering the beneficial effects of light therapy. He spent 20 years doing research at the National Institute of Mental Health before opening his own private research organization. Dr. Rosenthal has written or co-authored over 200 professional papers and five books for the general public, including Winter Blues. Dr. Rosenthal has turned his personal and professional attention to the study of Transcendental Meditation (TM), which is the topic of his latest book, Transcendence: Healing and Transformation Through Transcendental Meditation.
The state of "Transcendence" has been known as the fourth state of consciousness - beyond waking, sleeping and dreaming. The practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM) is one way of gaining access to this state. Dr Rosenthal discusses some basic elements of TM, and describes the experience of transcendence. TM and Transcendence bring with them many benefits, both physical and psychological. Dr. Rosenthal has seen the benefits that TM may offer people with emotional difficulties, including anxiety, anger management, depression and addiction. However, TM and Transcendence can benefit anybody, not just those with problems.
